Brief client and company background:
Newcastle University Law School is a self-contained department with a newly refurbished lecture theatre, student communal area and law library. It has around 700 students and 34 full time academics.
Introduction:
The 2008 teaching audit report praised the “physical identity and coherence of the school.” This is achieved by offering self-contained high quality, teaching and learning facilities in the School. Some highlights of the report were:
• The teaching accommodation is well equipped and comfortably furnished. The Law Lecture Theatre is a well presented 279 seater lecture theatre with three projectors.
• The purpose-built Mooting Room provides the perfect environment for students to hone their advocacy skills.
Brief:
The University’s ISS-AV department prepared the Audio Visual brief for the Law Lecture Theatre. The brief was extensive as the tender specified for Audio Visual equipment for the Lecture Theatre and one Seminar Room. Requirements included installation, integration and commission a fully functioning Audio Visual solution across a variety of disciplines.
Universal AV was awarded the tender and received the official purchase order in July 2014, for just under £60K.
Solution and Installation:
The Lecture Theatre hosts 279 students and has three Panasonic PT-RZ670 solid state projectors, projecting on to two 3000 x 1880 16:10 Fixed Frame Screen and one 2500 x 1560 16:10 Fixed Frame Screen (see Fig.01)
A Dalen Contour Solo Lectern was chosen to house all of the display and audio equipment, as well as the control system. An Extron TLP1000TV 10″ Tabletop TouchLink Touchpanel was used for the user interface.
Sources included:
• Client PC
• Laptop Input
• Blu Ray Player
• Visualiser
• Fibre Optic Link
All sources were routed to each projector via the Extron IN1608 Presentation Switcher. These signals were carried to each projector on HDBaseT, with HDMI being provided as a “back up” to the system, in case of any failure. A fibre optic link was also integrated into the system. This carried a signal from the Moot Room allowing the presentation of a mock court scenario. (See Fig. 02)
The audio centered on the Biamp Tesira Forte digital sound processor, with 8 x Revolabs lapel microphones and 1 x boundary mic being used to capture the audio.
An Ampetronic Induction Loop was supplied and fitted.
A provision was made to integrate with the University’s Panopto lecture capture system.
A seminar room was equipped to provide additional teaching space and act as an “overflow” facility for the Lecture Theatre. A Philips BDL6524 65″ Touchscreen was wall mounted. A Dalen Contour Solo Lectern was chosen to house the display and audio equipment, as well as the control system. An Extron MLC 226 AAP Controller was used for the user interface.
The sources included:
• Client PC
• Laptop Input
• Blu Ray Player
• Visualiser
• Lecture Theatre Overflow
All sources were routed to the screen via the Extron IN1608 Presentation Switcher (See Fig. 03). A provision was made to integrate with the University’s Panopto lecture capture system.
Mark Atkinson, Branch Manager, Universal AV comments: “This was another prestigious project entrusted to us by the University. The Law School was being completely refurbished so we had to co-ordinate our work with a number of trades and deliver within a very tight deadline. This was an intricate and sophisticated system using three projectors which we had to design to be flexible but easy to operate. We delivered an excellent system that both we and the University are very proud of.”
